This video is all about body language, and how to tell if a guy is interested. Which I thought was pretty useful and interesting as a writer. (It's so much nicer to use a "showing" bit of body language, than a telling sentence of narrative.)

Occasionally as writers, when we're reviewing or revising, we end up pleasantly surprised by something we did.

That happened to me yesterday.

I spent some time cleaning up the Fantasy Mountain web site, and updating the Calendar. In the process of checking pages for errors and re-reading all the text, I had a few of those proud moments. I particularly like the Introductions page and the Testimonials. But either way, it sure was fun building that site.

A Fantasy Come True

Long, long ago (well, about 5 years) I had a manuscript I absolutely adored--Fantasy Mountain--and it was out on query with a few "bigger" epubs. Well, some of them really wanted me to make major changes--such as removing the romance and subplots so that most of what remained was sex.

In the meantime, I contracted All Fore Revenge--another erotic romance--with Dark Eden Press, a very new publisher a friend had recommended. 2 weeks before All Fore Revenge's release date, Dark Eden closed its doors. And I got a contract for Fantasy Mountain with a more established, albeit still-very-small press. Luckily for me, Frank and Renee Rocco welcomed all the orphaned authors from Dark Eden, and I re-contracted All Fore Revenge with the new Lyrical Press.

Since then, I've written and published a few other titles. However, of all my books, Fantasy Mountain sort of languished in obscurity. The small publisher sold it at their site, and Fictionwise, and that was about it. When the contract expired, only its print version was on Amazon. Not what I'd call comprehensive distribution.

So now Fantasy Mountain has been re-edited, re-covered, and re-released, with my favorite publisher, Lyrical Press. It'll be available everywhere ebooks are sold, and since ebooks are the way of the future...

Yeah. I'm pretty stoked. (Book 2 in the Fantasies, Inc series releases this July)

A new year, a new chance to get it right. *muahahaha*

This year I cheated just a little and got a "leg up" on my resolutions: We bought a used BowFlex Revolution last month, so I've already been working out enough to be through those really sore days. I'm going with smaller changes toward getting back in shape this time--rather than a whole-life switcheroo diet like I tried last year. I plan to work out at least 5 times per week (I'm not even gonna fool myself about every day) and 2 of those workouts are upper body, which only take about 25 minutes. I can do this! :) And my dietary goals? Well, I'd like to add more veggies (which my fridge sadly lacks) and of course protein, since I'm building muscle. My one concrete nutritional goal is to limit my sodas to 1 per day.

Writing-wise, I'm partway there already. Waiting for Revenge will be revamped, recovered, and re-released as the lighter story it is--with a new title too: Trouble Won't Wait. I also plan to finish re-writing Hits and Misters, and get it to my editor. And... put out a newsletter. Somewhere I've got links saved for the newsletter-sending services.

This summer, I vow to do better with the yard. Which is a long way off, so I don't have to stress too much about it now. (which is probably how it's ending up on this list, LOL)

And that's it--I'm going easy on myself this year. Or so I'll think until next week when I've got 4 more workouts to go. LOL

1.)    What is your all-time best Christmas memory?

My favorite memory is a new one,and I cherish it more because it was so hard to come by. Being the child of asingle parent who struggled with alcoholism and mood disorders made certain mychildhood holidays were anything but warm and fuzzy. It took years and a longpainful personal journey to realize for my own health I had to let go of peoplewho hurt me, and build a new family, not of blood, but made of those who lovedme and wanted the best for me.

Last Christmas was the first onespent in my very own home. I invited members of my new family, and theytraveled from near and far to attend. I did all the things we all do forholiday guests. I cleaned like a madwoman. Cooked for days. Ate too much,played games, did a gift exchange, woke up early and shared coffee with thosenearest and dearest. Pretty much had an ordinary Christmas. And it was simply,wonderful.

2.)    As an adult, what is your favorite part of December?

My favorite part of December is NewYear’s Eve. The hustle and bustle is over, the carnage of Christmas all clearedaway. The house is clean, quiet, and ready to welcome a new year alive withpossibilities. Every year I’m excited by it.

3.)    Favorite Christmas movie, and why?

Scrooged. It’s over the top, a wildexaggeration, yet very funny, and at times poignant. I love to laugh. And Ihave a particular fondness for the ghost of Christmas future.

4.)    Why did you choose this book for the holiday bash?

This book actually contains holidayscenes, Thanksgiving and Christmas. That’s the primary reason it was chosen.It's book two of the Traveling Circus series, and it contains familiar themesabout the importance family plays in a person’s life. Whether or not thatfamily is related by blood or by choice, and I’ve come to realize through mywriting that family dynamics are significant and have lasting effects. Love, orthe lack of it, has the power to change people.

1.) What is your all-time best Christmas memory?

This is atough question to answer. Every childhood Christmas was special to me becausemy parents worked so hard to make it that way. Most of my memories seem tocenter around the Christmas tree, though. I remember going with my parents topick one at the local tree farms, throwing literal handfuls of tinsel “icycles”on in at a time, the spicy-sweet smell of pine, and lying on my back under thetree looking up through the branches at all the multicolored lights. Our treeswere always magical. As an adult, I’m always watching my kids, wondering whattheir Christmas memories will be—what sensation are they going to remember moststrongly?

2.) As an adult, what is your favorite part of December?

Now this isan easy question. I love all the preparation for Christmas, but really, mysingle favorite day in December is the winter solstice. There’s nothingmystical about my love for the winter solstice, although I appreciate that ithas a lot of meaning to many religions. Like my character Becky in my bookWinter Solstice, though, I love that day because it’s the shortest day of theyear. I feel like it has a promise to it, like because the days get longerafter that, you can start to anticipate spring without guilt.

3.) Favorite Christmas movie, and why?

Holiday Innwith Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. I’m an old-fashioned romantic at heart andthis movie fits the bill perfectly. Plus, it’s not JUST a Christmas movie,which I really like. And I can never get enough of Fred Astaire’s dancing orBing Crosby’s singing.

4.) Why did you choose this book for the holiday bash OR why didyou write this book?

I think Ican answer both parts of your question at once. I wrote this book because of mymother. I get my love for the winter solstice from her. She and I are bothspringtime people, and when I was growing up she always made some note of thewinter solstice. Nothing big, but she’d mention it, and it’s still something weshare. The Christmas season is a time of joy, and the winter solstice is a timeof hope. The two just fit together.

1.) What is your all-time best Christmas memory?

Wow, how doyou pick one? I had to close my eyes, blank out my brain and let the firstthing come to my mind. It was…….I couldn’t do it. Rats. One Christmas when thefamily was still ‘intact’ we had everyone to our house in the country. Abeautiful snow fell all Christmas Eve Day. That night we all went outside to totake the horses their Christmas treat. It was a brilliant night, stars shiningin the velvety sky and the snow sparkled like diamonds were cast upon it (Ihave used this image in a few stories) It was a magical night and I remember itfondly.

2.) As an adult, what is your favorite part of December?

Decorating,baking, having company and putting Elliot the Elf up. It was a folk art piece Ipainted when my boys were little. An advent calendar and until Elliot was onthe mantle it didn’t feel like Christmas.

3.) Favorite Christmas movie, and why?

Theclassics – It’s A Wonderful Life, White Christmas, because they don’t makemovies like they used to.

And thestaple – Christmas Vacation, because it slays me each year. I know what’scoming, it still kills me.

Christmas Traditions at Ericka Scott’s House

Around the Scott household, the weekends betweenThanksgiving and Christmas all seem to be jam-packed with Christmas parties andfamily get-togethers. Some years, we have too many to fit into two short days.Over the last couple of years, I’ve let activities crowd out some of our mostmemorable traditions. Not this year.

This year, we’re having a real tree which we’ll decorate tothe strains of NSync’s Christmas album (it’s tradition, you know). Then, we’llgather around the fireplace to light our Yule log and eat sugar cookies we madeto distribute to the neighbors as gifts.

These cookies are, in our eyes, masterpieces. No, theyaren’t those gorgeous things you see in bakery windows, but have the quirksthat our family is known by. We decorate Christmas fish, only one of which isgiven three eyes and made especially for our friend, Jon. There are sometraditional shapes, stars and Santas, but you are just as likely to find rocketships amongst the Christmas trees, a T-Rex waiting to devour the red and greenbunnies, and there is always a haunted church cookie -- complete with sugar blackbats in the belfry.

“Hello?” she called. A creak sounded from above and atrickle of discomfort slid down her spine. She pulled out her key chain, fromwhich hung a small canister of mace. Another creak made her jump.

“Hello?” she called again. Taking a deep breath, she strodepurposefully into the house and found herself in a small living room. Liaglimpsed a small alcove off to the side and expected to find a small diningarea, or perhaps an attached office.

Her breath caught in her throat as she walked into anotherlarge living room and straight into the past. Positioned under the window werethe couch and loveseat she remembered from growing up. A recliner sat in thecorner, a newspaper already opened to the comics on the seat.

She shivered. A tall enclosed bookcase, the one that hadresided in Lia’s bedroom, stood next to the window. If she stepped closer, sheknew she’d recognize every title on its shelves.

A small wooden rocking chair sat next to the recliner. ARaggedy Ann doll vied for seat space with her twin, Raggedy Andy.

“Oh, God,” Lia said. The memorial to her family should havebeen macabre. Instead, it brought tears to her eyes. Even the antique desk hersister, Sylvie, had thrown a fit to own and then despised when computers becamepopular and her father wouldn’t let her buy a more functional desk had a placein the room. A smile tugged at the corner of Lia’s mouth.

She could almost hear Sylvie’s famous whine, “But, Dad…”

As memories flooded her mind, she had to blink back a suddenrush of tears. She took a step back, turned and nearly ran back to the hallway.A light dimmed and brightened in another room. Lia didn’t need to count thepulses to know there would be eight.

A short walk found her in the kitchen. The stainless steelappliances sparkled and even the floor seemed to have been freshly waxed. Shewished her kitchen looked this good. A towering pile of newspapers indicatedthey were sisters, after all. The stack teetered on the corner of the kitchentable. All of them were opened and folded to reveal the crossword puzzle.

Had Sylvie left these here? She couldn’t remember her sisterhaving a penchant for crosswords, but she obviously didn’t know Sylvie as wellas she’d thought.

Or had someone else brought these in and put them there?

Speaking of which, where was her sister?

She headed upstairs, calling as she went. Just as empty asdownstairs. And just as neat. A small blue plastic item on the floor of hersister’s office appeared to be the only thing out of place.

Lia scooped it up. A thumb drive. She went to put it on thedesk when a loud creak sounded behind her. She shoved it into her pocket andfumbled for her keys.

Heavy footsteps approached up the stairs.

Lia turned as a shadow fell across the doorway.

1.) What is your all-time best Christmas memory?

My favorite memory is waking up Christmas morning the yearour daughter was born. It was the first Christmas in our house and our daughterwas four months old. She didn’t give a hoot about the gifts, but it was a veryspecial time for us.

2.) As an adult, what is your favorite part of December?

The abundance of Christmas cookies makes me very happy inDecember. I love that no matter where you go, treats will be out because it isthe thing to do. Some aren’t the best, but I don’t mind. I enjoy the nearconstant sugar high I maintain from the first until after New Years.

3.) Favorite Christmas movie, and why?

I like Elf. It’s got a sweet story line and while I canwatch it with my kids, it has adult humor as well. Oh and the music. I love themusic in the movie.

4.) Why did you write this book?

I adore writing holiday stories. Plotting around a holidayis like introducing another character because a certain feel and personalitycome along with it. A Winter Tale With Marshmallows combines the paranormalaspect with werewolves, but also so many winter and Christmastime activitiesthat are so special to so many people. It’s one of those stories that makes mesmile as soon as I pick it up and I’m happy to share it.

1.) What is your all-time best Christmas memory?

The first Christmas with my husband. I hadn’t had a tree inquite a few years and my husband surprised me when I got home from work. Therewas a three foot tree in our bedroom with one multi-colored star ornament onit. He said we can start collecting our own Christmas ornaments together andthe star was just to start us off. To this day the star stays in sight all yeararound.

2.) As an adult, what is your favorite part of December?

About a week before Christmas the kids start getting antsyand excited. There’s lots of chattering, the smell of cookies and cakes baking,along with presents starting to fill up the underneath of the tree. It's purechaos and so much fun!

LOL The ChristmasStory, of course! ‘You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!’

This movie is so much fun and we make a point to all sit andwatch it together every holiday season. J

4.) Why did you choose this book for the holiday bash?

Christmas is about forgiveness and changing your ways forthe better. In Divine RedemptionDonald must learn to forgive himself for the mistakes in his past and acceptthe gifts of love and trust from those he’s come to care for. Now, doesn’t thatsound like a Christmas miracle?

1.) What is your all-time best Christmas memory?

My best Christmas memory was when I believed in SantaClaus. That childlike innocence, bubbling excitement, unquestionable faith insomething so powerful and magical made Christmas special for me. And all thepresents, of course!

2.) As an adult, what is your favorite part of December?

LOVE the lights. Everything looksso sparkly and colorful. We drive through neighborhoods, oohing and ahhingwhile taking it all in. Sometimes the simplest light displays are the mostbeautiful because they capture the true spirit of Christmas.

3.) Favorite Christmas movie, and why?

A Christmas Story! We watch itevery year. It’s an all-American tale that offers comfort, joy, andunforgettable laugh out loud scenes. The sexy leg lamp is classic!

4.) Why did you write this book?

When I set out to write DangerousDesire, I wanted to do something different, a little more edgy than my previousbooks. I chose to make the hero a petdetective (No. He’s nothing like Ace Ventura!) because frankly, I hadn’t seenmany tough guys with this profession. Alove for animals softened his hard exterior. I found it attractive, and thought my heroine would too.

I knew who my hero was. How would he utilize his specialskills? While I was brainstormingideas, pro football player Michael Vick’s dogfighting scandal madeheadlines. Believe it or not, itspurred the plot for Dangerous Desire.

I’m an animal lover, and I hadstrong feelings about dogfighting. Still, the story called out to me. I like to write about real-life issues. Bad things happen, and I try not to shy away from something just becauseit might be unpopular.

But I digress… After all, Dangerous Desire is a hotromance! It’s a story about a secondchance at love. The road to a happyending may have some bumps along the way. It doesn’t stop us from trying to reach our destination.

1.) What is your all-time best Christmas memory?

Growing up Jewish, we were always a little different sincewe never had a Christmas tree or celebrated Christmas at all. But our familytraditions were wonderful from eating latkes with applesauce and playingHanukkah songs and dancing like crazy people.

2.) As an adult, what is your favorite part of December?

I love being a parent during this season. My daughter and Ialways make a gingerbread house so Santa can be charmed. We bake fresh cookiesfor him too and place reindeer nibbles out on the balcony. We also decorate thehouse with Christmas and Hanukkah decorations and it’s all so great!

3.) Favorite Christmas movie, and why?

A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim. When he wakes up and it’sChristmas morning, his joy always makes me laugh and get teary eyed.

4.) Why did you choose this book for the holiday bash OR why didyou write this book?

Sugar B’s Back in Town is a story about a woman who findsher own personal redemption in family, community and connection. It’s what theholidays are all about. Pettiness can be put aside and all the old hurts have achance to be forgotten as the spirit of giving enters our life.

I love that Sugar begins as a broken woman but she findsherself and her worth. I’d hope that for anybody who feels lost, the holidayoffers a sense of community in which to find themselves.

It's Pampered Chef's Grapefruit Knife. For $8, this little gadget makes sectioning grapefruit a snap. The image doesn't do it justice, because it's hard to see the curved, tapered tip--which is what makes the knife effective at getting down the bottom of the fruit sections and separating it from the rind, and also getting into those little crevices at the center.

I love grapefruit, but will admit, I've sometimes bought it and let it go bad because I was too lazy to section it in the morning. No more a problem in my house.

Due date, shmoo date.

14 years ago today, I was pissed.

And very large.

November 30th was my due date when I was pregnant with my daughter. The doctor and both midwives had been telling me for weeks they thought she'd arrive early--she'd dropped more than a month before and I was simply, massively, uncomfortable. But on D-day... nothing. The doctors were planning stress tests if I didn't deliver soon, but no significant contractions that Sunday.

My SIL was also due November 30th last year, with a girl. And guess what? No baby. (in fact, she delivered on the same date I did... which is a story for another day) So for any women out there who are prego and "due" today, I'm feelin' for ya. Really. Hang in there. :)

Review: Beneath the Surface

Beneath the Surface (available in print or ebook) is by one of the authors on my Lyrical Press editing roster, MJ Fredrick. I love the books I've edited for her, and I loved Midnight Sun, so I also bought this one, expecting I'd enjoy it.

And she didn't disappoint. The main characters are archaeologists--divorced archaeologists. Well, working on being divorced, as she has gone to his dig to make him sign the papers, because she's engaged and soon to be married.

Any romance reader knows where this is going. Yeah, there's still a flame burning, and it's quite hot. The pain between the H and h is very intense, very real, and made me root for them to patch things up. I loved all the sassy give and take between characters, as well as the "doctor" both H and h are emotionally attached to. And what would an archaeological dig be, without betrayal, thievery, and murder? The suspense kept me wondering up til the last few pages. (In fact, if I was that kind of mystery reader, I'd have been trying to guess how things would turn out. Sadly, I'm along for the ride in a mystery and never try to put the clues together--I'm a mystery "sheep".) Nicely done!

I will add, a couple of the scary underwater scenes made me feel totally claustrophobic, but that could be the author's skill or from my personal experience this summer, attempting SCUBA.

I'd rate Beneath the Surface a Nice Bang for Your Entertainment Buck. Well worth your time and money. Pass it on to someone who'll enjoy it and keep the author on your radar.

I've been inspired this month, by friends who post something they're grateful for, every day on Facebook, commercials on the radio, etc.

So. I can definitely name some things I'm grateful for (in no particular order of importance):

I'm grateful for my 2 goofy, healthy, well-behaved, smarty-pants teenagers and all the things they do to make me proud.
I'm grateful for my hard working, tenacious husband, who's managed to make his business a success and provide for us all, despite the tanked economy.
I'm grateful the aforementioned husband dogs me nightly to go walking with him, even when I piss and whine about the cold or being tired or how hard it is to lose weight or the wind or whatever myriad complaints I come up with.
I'm grateful for the 16 fantabulous authors currently on my roster, who trust me with their literary "babies".
I'm also grateful to Renee Rocco, for trusting me to help her run her "baby", Lyrical Press. Seems like I learn something every week at this job... ;)
I'm grateful for my job as a teacher stunt double, where I get to hang with the future grown-ups of the world...and I'm thankful at the end of each day at that job, that the kiddos are cool to me.
Every month when I get my royalty statements, I'm grateful for each and every reader who decides to buy one or more of my books, out of all the bajillions of novels out there.
I'm still grateful for my group of critique partners, who may all be many states or countries away, but can still brighten my day just by checking in or sharing a snarky thought. Many people scoff at the idea of internet friendships, but they really can be fulfilling.
I'm grateful for my forever writing companion, Red Bull. My winged beverage friend can't beta read or critique, but sure keeps me inspired and alert.

Tidings of Fear

Another book from my editing roster released today, just in time for the holidays...and I really love this title.

Ericka Scott writes a wide range of genres, and excels at suspense/mystery. Tidings of Fear has a romantic thread, too (with a theme I love--second chances). She weaves a suspenseful story, leaving the reader guessing the outcome to the last minute--and not just whether the lead characters will have a romantic ending, but whether they'll survive the ordeal.

Confused, Lia shook her head. “I tried to call her earlier.”

“Please call her again.”

“Sure.” Lia pulled her phone out and punched in Margaret’sphone number.

“Put it on speaker, please.” The officer snapped.

The call went straight to voice mail.

“Then it’s not only our calls she’s avoiding,” he murmured.

“We don’t understand.” Jared said. “Has there been a newlead?”

The officer’s expression darkened, and Lia felt her eyeswell up with tears. Oh God, Sylvie was dead.

“No.”

“Then, why--” Lia began.

“We have reason to believe your sister voluntarilydisappeared with her son to avoid appearing in court.”

“Court?”

“She didn’t tell you?”

Lia pursed her lips. “I already told one of your officers thatI haven’t had contact with my sister for seven years. Honestly, I didn’t evenknow she’d had a baby.”

“Well, seems the father of the child is suing for custody.”

“Custody?” Lia felt stupid echoing back the officer’s words,but she didn’t know what else to say. She’d assumed that the baby had been theresult of in vitro fertilization, or whatever method of conception most gaycouples used.

“Yes, she and Deion were to appear in order to obtain a DNAsample to prove Mr. Kyle Creswell’s paternity.”

Lia’s mind went numb.

“We suspect your sister disappeared voluntarily to avoidthat event. It’s doubly suspicious that her partner is also missing.”

Lia swallowed, hard.

“You think this is a staged disappearance. A hoax?” Jaredstated.

“Yes, we do.”

“Oh my,” was all Lia could say. Could Sylvie have simply runaway, leaving everything--her house, car, business and valuables--behind? Itdidn’t seem like something her sister would do, but did she really know Sylvieanymore?

“We can no longer dedicate men and resources toinvestigating the disappearance. Unless new information comes in, we reallyhave no choice but to close the case.”

“I see,” Lia said, her voice sounding small and unsure toher own ears.

“But what if she didn’t disappear voluntarily?” Jared asked.

The officer’s gaze softened a bit. “I’m sorry. I know thismust be difficult for you, especially since you traveled all this way.”

Lia started to stand, but Jared’s hand held her down. Hedidn’t seem ready to admit defeat. “If we turn up something that indicates shedidn’t disappear of her own accord--”

“Then, by all means, give us a call. But honestly, I don’tthink that evidence exists.”

At that moment, the lights in the station flickered and wentout.

The officer cursed. “Stay here, and I’ll go see if one ofthose damned reporters plugged too many cameras in out front and blew a fuse.”

Then, just as suddenly as they went out, the lights cameback on. Lia’s eyes were drawn to the alarm clock sitting on the officer’scredenza. The time flashed on and off. The clock displayed all eights.

Lia shivered. She didn’t have an ounce of evidence tosupport her belief that Sylvie hadn’t disappeared voluntarily, she simply knew.If the police weren’t going to be out looking for her, that meant she had tofind Sylvie.

As if reading her mind, Jared bent over, and murmuredsoftly, “Don’t worry, we’ll find her.”

She wished she could be so sure.

Where the Private Things Are

I've noticed an alarming trend in social networking, and perhaps this topic has been covered in Twitter for Dummies or The Idiot's Guide to Facebook, but... way too many women are giving us way too much information. In fact, the term TMI may have been invented just because of this phenomenon.

Ladies. Girls. Women. Please do not "share" with the universe at large when you are... you know... whatever you want to call it--menstruating, having your period, on your cycle, being visited by Aunt Flo, Aunt Rose, or your "friend. Just don't.

To clarify, I'll provide a list of who wants to know when you are riding the cotton pony:

Nobody.

It might feel good to complain about your mood or cramps or whatever, but I can assure you--we don't want to know. Sorry, but that's your own private pain. The rest of us--even fellow women--Simply. Don't. Need. To know. (Not mention, once you put that "out there", men who follow you will categorically discount all complaints you have for the rest of the week.) Probably if you wouldn't stand up and shout this information to a stadiumful of your acquaintances and also strangers, you shouldn't tweet it, either.

If you've already transgressed and shared TMI, don't despair. Just make a vow, here and now, to reform. To cut back your Monthly Mense Messages to, say... Never Again.

You can do this. It should remain a private little secret among the shoppers on the feminine hygiene aisle: you, a couple of other women, the young embarrassed husband, and the guy with the combover and a Cosmo magazine in hand, who darts in to grab a bottle of Astroglide. See? Sometimes we don't want all the deets.

A bit of mystery is a good thing.

Lending, Shmending--My take on the Amazon hooplah

It's been almost 2 weeks since Amazon unveiled its new Kindle Lending Library, and from the uproar among authors, you'd think they've already got plans to Occupy Amazon.

So, let me (briefly) recap what Amazon offers:

Anybody with a Kindle can lend their books to friends, but only for 14 days max. Not new. At least for several years. And I honestly have no problem with this feature. The cool thing about Kindles (from an author’s angle) is that Kindle owners can’t make a copy of a book file and send it out 557 times to whoever they want, or upload it to some file-sharing site. It’s between their Kindle and Amazon. Period. (and of course, that friend who can temporarily borrow it) Do I have a problem with a reader sharing the story she loves with another reader, thus doing my publicity for me, and spreading my fan base? Never. At least with Amazon, it’s a limited thing... PDFs, notsomuch.

Now, if you have Amazon Prime ($79 per year), you can A)watch movies/TV streaming B)Get free 2-day shipping all year on all purchases and 3)Borrow (for yourself) 1 book per month, like a library book. Amazon has “over 100,000 bestselling titles” available for this.

Now this is what's causing authors to twitch. My thoughts on the matter?

Yayy Amazon! I’ma get me a Kindle. (LOL) And one for dear daughter, too.
People can already check out damn near all books via ebook from their libraries anyway (and if your local library doesn’t have them or doesn’t have many, try your state library system, like for me the Denver Public library gives out cards to anybody with a Colorado license, and I can get ebooks there). And true, we authors do get a tiny stipend back from OverDrive when somebody checks out our book from the library, but...
Hello? 100,000 bestsellers. Uh, yeah. I’ve never been in the top 100,000 on Amazon. (well, maybe once, but that was when I was buying copies of my books for a convention) They sell upward of 5 gajillion books. So the people who you’d think might possibly feel the crunch from lost sales because of this (best selling authors) most likely sell enough books that they will not, in fact, feel the crunch.
If by some chance my book ends up in the Amazon lending library and some lady wants to read it, I am SO for it. I’m betting she’ll like it, and tell other people she liked it, which means they might, in turn, buy it (and that reader who borrowed it just might write me a good review---which I am forever salivating for).
I’m betting most Kindle owners who opt into the program will use it to buy those pricey bestsellers (you know, the ones Big 6 pubs have decided to put astronomical prices on?) rather than waste their 1-per-month on a $5.50 or less title from Lyrical Press. Kindle owners are comprised mainly of voracious readers who see from the outset that they’ll save money on books in the longrun, because they buy so dang many.
And the bottom line is: Amazon did it because Amazon can. Our other option includes (and is limited to) NOT selling our books there, which—as somebody who has been published with other houses which did not sell my books through Amazon, I can attest to—is virtually shooting yourself in the foot, sales-wise. Amazon has been, and continues to be, our top-selling vendor, most of the time selling as many books as all our other vendors combined.

Like it or lump it, but move on, already. If it was 30 years ago and your book was only available in print, readers could buy that hardback, read it, then lend it out to 20 of their closest friends and finally sell it on the yard sale for a quarter. That--and libraries--would've been your best means of spreading the word and growing a fanbase. And guess how many times you'd have earned a royalty? So get over yourself and get back to NaNoWriMo, already.

I finished reading Something Borrowed. As I said before, it was different from the movie, and that's fine.

I did like the main character, Rachel. Although... honestly, if I hadn't seen the movie and wasn't confident in a happy ending, I might've put the book down, about 100 pages from the end. She really was entirely too passive for too long. Not "too stupid to live" but at one point, she spends quite a while comparing herself to "those women"--the ones who spend years as the other woman, waiting and hoping that the cheating man they love will leave his wife and spend his life with her. Time and again she planned to give Dex an ultimatum, but then let him off the hook. Rachel also spent entirely too many years supporting her witchy, shallow best friend. So it's a little hard for me to relate to her. And the book went on for too long after what was basically the end of the story--without any further resolution, that I could tell. Like a couple of trailing chapters there should've been freebies on the author's website, rather than part of the actual book. Again, back to my original assessment, that if this book had hit an agent/editor ten years later, it never would've made it to publication. At least, not without some major revisions.

Overall, I'd give Something Borrowed a: Borrow It. An okay read, but try to borrow it from a friend or library. This author will likely improve with experience, so remember him/her.

Now, from the movie, it appeared the sequel, Something Blue, would feature Rachel and Darcy's friend Ethan. But there's an excerpt in the back of this book, written in 1st person, and the main character is Darcy (the witchy, shallow friend). I read the excerpt and tried really hard to want it, but in the end, her voice hadn't captured my attention. I don't like her enough to want to read her story. So, sadly, I think this is the end of me and this series.

Next up, I'll be finishing How to Write Hot Sex, and then delving into MJ Fredrick's Beneath the Surface.

Whatcha Readin' Wednesday

After accidentally watching the movie last week, I decided I really must read Something Borrowed, by Emily Giffin.

About halfway through, I'm pleasantly surprised. The movie deviated quite a bit, and that's okay in this case. Same basic premise, but that's about it. I do have to wonder if it would've made publication in today's market, though... this book is majorly introspection and flashback--of the first 100 pages, probably less than 25 were "current action". It's well written though, and Giffin does a nice job of making us sympathize with the heroine, Rachel--who is doing something we'd normally abhor--namely, her best friend's fiancee.

Anyway. I should be ready for a full review on it next week.

Am slacking so hard on the NaNo project.

The Un-retchables.

Remember how some guys you went to school with were so annoying/full of themselves/yucky in general, the thought of them as, well... guys made you want to make retching noises? But sometimes those guys grow into not-so-retchish men.

Which is just what happens for the heroine in today's new release--and I love this premise. (I've gotta confess to be a bit biased, since I edited the story, but still...)

The book's title is Rachel Dahlrumple (yeah, what a mouthful--imagine the hassles that poor chick got from yucko boys back in the day, right?). And in Rachel's case, the guy grew up to be a most unretchable cop.

Her husband's death is just the beginning of her maritalwoes.

Rachel's humiliation over the discovery of her latehusband's affairs turns to fear when one of his mistresses sends her a poisonedbouquet. But finding the source of the killer flowers is only one step on herpath to solving the mystery her husband left behind.

Deputy Dan Weston is with Rachel when the bouquet arrives,and he's at her side as she deals with so many of the secrets that come tolight after her husband's death. Dan has carried a torch for Rachel sincepuberty and he's not going to let her dead husband's vindictive girlfriends orhis psychotic mother come between them now. But that means finding out who issending snakes and poisoned posies before one kills Rachel.

I looked up at Dan’s expression. All teasing gone. Cop mode.

“I’m a simple person, Deputy Weston. Steady and calm.Boring. I don’t offend anyone, and no one gives me trouble. Unless you’retalking about Jose Delgado, who is three weeks late with the last book hechecked out.”

“Care to revise your statement?”

A few quick blinks brought the deputy back into focus,though I could feel the airways in my lungs constricting.

“I know who’s going to die, and isn’t going to be me,” Iwhispered. “Chinese water torture is too good for him. Splinter those bamboochopsticks--the minute he gets home, they’re going under his fingernails.” I’dlearned a few things from my father’s stories of ’Nam. And of course, byreading about the war. After all, I was a librarian. I’d read nearly every bookon the shelves. Maybe I’d do a search on torture techniques.

The tanned face near mine blanched. “Easy going, ma’am.”

Right. I wasn’t known for saying such things. I wasn’t knownfor saying much.

“Well?” I demanded. My fragile world had just vaporizedbefore my eyes and it was far too soon to see what might be left. If anything.The only future visible looked like a rapidly expanding black hole.

Someone wanted me dead. But who? My husband? His girlfriend?Divorce loomed ahead like a huge gaping maw. I wanted to wail, gnash my teeth,and obliterate something, anything. Of course, I was Rachel the Mouse, so I didmy best to hide the violent urges building inside. Rachel the Meek never, ever,let loose with her most primitive emotions. She hid them deep, keeping a calm,submissive, accepting face turned toward the world at large.

“What would you do?”

For the first time I could remember in our long history, Danlooked directly, and very deeply, into my eyes. The sympathy, sincerity, andconcern on his face hit me. Already overwhelmed from too many emotions boilingin my heart and head, I had no defense or response for his reply, or the way heever-so-lightly caressed my cheek with the back of his fingers.

“Since I’m not the kind of idiot your husband is, Rachel, Iwouldn’t be stupid enough to screw around on the most amazing woman anywhere.Were I the lucky one to have you, I wouldn’t leave you alone long enough foryou to ever feel abandoned.”

Aside from asthma and allergy, I was a healthy woman. I’dnever, ever, once fainted in my life. But the shocks to my system that nighthit too hard. A poisonous gift, a nasty note, knowledge I didn’t want of myhusband’s cheating ways, and a gorgeous, younger man, telling me he consideredme amazing… The zing I felt in my tummy from his touch did me in.

Black waves engulfing me, limbs losing strength, I slowlycollapsed, Dan catching me at the last moment of consciousness. Like anynineteenth-century heiress worth her crumpets and tea, I fainted right into hisarms.

Whatcha Readin' Wednesday

I just finished Victoria Dahl's Lead Me On. It's 3rd in a series (trilogy? I didn't notice any more single women in the story who needed married off, except for a 91 year old granny, and I don't think we'd want to go there just yet) about Aspen and her fictional town of Tumble Creek. Incidentally, I have read the first book in the series, Talk Me Down, but somehow missed reading #2. (Harry Potter is the only series I've ever read in order. It's a syndrome I suffer from.)

Anyway... Cute story. I love the bad-boy attraction factor (bad boys are made FOR good girls, right?). The characters' motivations are totally understandable--Jane has quite a past she's determined to keep under wraps, and Chase doesn't want her to know he's privvy to it. The characters themselves didn't resonate quite as much as those in Talk Me Down--seriously, I think of those characters often, especially Molly. But overall, I'd say Lead Me On is a Nice Bang for Your Entertainment Buck. Well worth your time and money, but probably not something you'll re-read. Pass it on to someone who’ll enjoy it and keep the author on your radar.

Next on the Reader: How to Write Hot Sex: Tips from Multi-Published Erotic Romance Authors. So far I'm into the 3rd essay, and they've all been very good. (One of the authors I edit for--LK Below--is a contributor.)

Last year I ended up ranting the day after Halloween, about adults who came around trick-or-treating. True they were with little kids, but carrying their own "loot bag" or bucket.

We live in one of those neighborhoods where everybody in town takes their kids to trick-or-treat. And that's fine. I like being a part of the festivities.

However. Tonight I'm going to be a mean old witch to those full-grown loot-seekers. Kids will be the only recipients here.

Plenty of people have plenty of complaints about Facebook: security/privacy issues, changes in formats, individuals who use it as a means to be rude/show off/be a friend ho/promote stuff.

Whatever.

You know what? I'm fine with Facebook. It's free, so who am I to complain when the admins change the format? I choose who my friends are--and have gotten vigilant about making sure they are people I 1)Like 2)Believe honestly like me back 3)Know aren't solely concerned with selling me stuff. (which makes me Not All That Worried About Privacy)

And you know what else? I've connected with a whole BUNCH of old friends. And that rocks. Really. Every time I make one of those connections, I'm all filled with happeh. I'm reasonably sure I wouldn't be in contact with most of them, if Facebook wasn't around. Go Social Network!

But then I think again and realize, no--the other people are just ridiculous and my workedupness is completely justified. :)

No. Really... what the hell? Is it really too much trouble to grab some denim and slip it on? Do these people--particularly adults, although I'm never impressed with teenagers in pj's either--not realize how sloppy and lazy they look? Good God.

Clearing the Decks

This November I'm participating in NaNoWriMo. (for all you layfolk, that's National Novel Writing Month)

I probably won't be joining any of their groups, or going to any "write-ins". But I'm sure gonna try to bust out a novel.

And in order to focus on writing, I need to get All Caught Up (anybody know where I can buy those? LOL) on my editing projects. My ToDo list is long and detailed, but I'm thinking it might work!

Husbandhead got a new atomic alarm clock this past week--one with lots of neat bells and whistles, such as displaying inside temperature, an outside remote thermometer, and it shows the moon phases, etc. The outdoor sensor doesn't sense so well--or anyway, it doesn't do a good job of getting the info inside all the time, so it's going back where it came from (probably taped back up and stuck on the store shelf, LOL). But in helping get the thing set up, I read some pretty poor instructions.

Keep in mind, this is an upper end alarm clock, made by Sharp:

You should place the outdoor sensor within approx.Must've been too tough to spell out approximately 90 feet of the clock. Obsticles dunno what these are, but I bet they are sticky such as; semicolon? really? are they about to invade where they don't belong the way apostrophes have? walls, concrete and large metal objects can reduce the reinge. Well, hell. There's our problem. We've got walls around the outside of our damn house! No wonder our reinge sucks! Still doesn't explain why some days it's fine...But hey. Maybe if we put the alarm clock outside, near the sensor... Reception can also be determined by the materials in a building. Try some different areas to see where your sensor is best suited to send a clear signal to the clock. Wait approximately Wait. There was space aplenty to spell it out this time? Editor's note: They had more than 3/4 of a blank line at end of this paragraph, so it wasn't a space-saving move to abbreviate above. Maybe it's a "green" measure, to save ink? 15 minutes before permanetly Hm. Makes me wonder if our translator perhaps spelled this using phonics? Whatever the case, I think their proofreader should be sent on permanet leave. mounting to ensure that there is proper reception.

Things That Work

If you're going to walk or run for fitness, shoes aren't just important--they are Priority One. The wrong shoes can cause pain and seriously dampen motivation.

Now, the right shoes on the other hand... Well, let's just say the ones I got last weekend make me feel like flying around the neighborhood, and when I get home, nothing feels worn out or sore. I didn't see this commercial until I went looking for blog info, but it's pretty cute:

I'll probably think about those lil "buddies" every time I wear them out now. LOL

These shoes really are "like wow". Or, in the words of Napoleon Dynamite, "Freaking awesome! Gosh." Lightweight, comfy, and no shin splint pain! (and yes, I'm usually one of those perpetually injured, whiny speedwalkers) My last pair of shoes were a budget buy, and I'll honestly NEVER do that again.

Hubby wants to stock up and buy several pairs... I'm thinking he may be onto something.

Whatcha (not) Reading Wednesday

I'm having a really hard time with the book I'm attempting to read. It's got a great premise, and the author is quite popular. Its publisher is huge. The problem? I'm not sure--other than it appears to be poorly edited (lots of passive prose and repetitive phrases), the author headhops from one character's point of view to another from one paragraph to the next (not in itself a deal breaker, because Nora changes POV quite often and I'm always into her stories), and then there's the backstory. God, the backstory. I do like to have a wellrounded character I can really get to know. Thing is, I'd rather get to know them one at a time, and a little at a time as the story progresses. In this book, the author seems bent on introducing us to the characters' entire extended families--and I think I know why. This book is a Free Read. I'm wondering if it wasn't written solely to suck readers into these other characters and their stories. Not a bad marketing plan, really. But it needs to be done well.

Because honestly, I've got a lot of other things to do with my time (doesn't everyone?). And it's a whole lot easier to justify deleting a free ebook and moving on to something better, than it is with one I've paid for.

Today I posted acquisitions on the LPI blog, and talked a bit about how even some of the most staunchly determined Big-6-or-Bust authors are now coming around to the possibilities of self-pubbing or going with a smaller press. One of the best comments I've seen on this topic was along the lines of, "The whole point of writing is so other people can read what you wrote. Self-publishing or epublishing accomplishes that, whereas waiting for your big break does not." Another point came up--even if an author sold her newest manuscript, all those others currently residing in Rubbermaid homes under the bed/on her hard drive, would still stay right there. So she might as well go for it and at least get those earlier books out there.

I've gotta love Amazon for being determined to go out there and rumble in the marketplace. Now they're unveiling a tablet--the Kindle Fire--which will do pretty much everything the iPad does, for just $199. They're actually going to sell it at a loss, counting on sales of books/music/movies/general merchandise. I can see this working out for them.

Also--they'll be unveiling a $79 Kindle. Have I mentioned libraries have started loaning Kindle-formatted ebooks now?

And you know, this could be just in time, because my poor Sony Reader's battery just doesn't last anymore.

Another Meg, another Wednesday

Just a short review about another Meg Cabot book (yes, I've been on a binge). This one is She Went All the Way. It's a fun, fast read...but this one isn't really appropriate for the YA crowd, in my opinion. Definitely more of an adult selection.

I'd rate it a: Nice Bang for Your Entertainment Buck. Well worth your time and money, but not necessarily worth a re-read. Pass it on to someone who’ll enjoy it and keep the author on your radar.

I think next on my reading list will be Irresistible Forces, by Brenda Jackson (currently FREE at the Kindle store--I think I got my copy at a holiday giveaway).

Interview with Lux Zakari

Do I have Special Guest music? Well, anyway... today's feature is an interview with authorosa fabulosa, Lux Zakari:

1. What do you like most about writing erotica, and why?

I like that when I write about sex, it feels deserved. I want the scene to be both hot and like nothing else is more important, like the characters’ whole lives were leading up to this one moment. (And, because I am the boss of them, that is the case!) I enjoy creating intense relationships and having them culminate in a satisfying payoff. Doing so also allows me to get creative with ideas I may not have found sexy before, but now they absolutely are.

2. Conversely, what do you hate most about writing erotica/being an erotica author?

Ooh, I enjoy this question! The thing I hate the most about being an erotica author is that I often feel I can’t admit to most people what I write about and, subsequently, that I have a few published works under belt, which is a great achievement and I’m very proud of that. Children’s authors have it easy! I, on the other hand, never know how people will react, with all the writing about erogenous zones I do. I know personally that if I met someone or was interviewing someone for a job and he or she said they wrote erotica novels in their spare time, I’d be all, “Tell me more, tell me more, didja get very far?” and clamoring for details. But I know not everyone’s like that. Some are fainter of heart.

3. Do you think any stereotypes about romance writers or readers are true?

I’m not even sure what stereotypes of romance writers exist! I can’t even begin to suppose. I will say no, because I enjoy romance stories and feel that I am as weird as they come. (Or are romance writers/readers weird as they come? I don’t know!)

4. Finale doesn’t look like the typical romance. (HEA?) Was it a big deviation from your “usual” work?

Finale is definitely not the typical romance. I consider it an unconventional love story, with stress on “unconventional,” considering the story opens with the hero being dead. (On that note, I should probably clarify that there is zero necrophilia in this story! There is not that much stress on “unconventional.”)

As for it being a deviation from my usual work, I don’t think that I yet have usual work for myself. Coercion was my first novel, and it was both erotic and dark, and I suppose that did set a standard for what my future work would be like. However, Finale is definitely a departure from that; I think readers will be surprised at the differences between the two stories. Two other stories of mine that are in pre-publication deviate even further. I hope that readers will associate my work with not any kind of presumption of a plot, but rather that the story will be sexy, funny and intriguing. I’d like my readers to expect not knowing what to expect!

5. If you had it to do over, would you start your writing career differently?

Not at all. I worked hard to get where I am, and actually, I don’t really consider myself truly anywhere yet! I think I’m still at the start of it. There is more to come.

6. Any advice for new/unpublished writers?

Actively seek opportunities that grant you and your writing exposure; you never know where one of those opportunities will lead. For example, writing articles for a local paper may seem far from your dreams of being a famous novelist, but it isn’t. You’re improving your writing, padding your resume and making contacts – people who know other people, who may have other opportunities for you. Wedge that foot of yours in the door. Use social media to make friends with other authors; bounce ideas off each other and don’t be shy about asking for advice. Most of the time, people are happy to help.

Person of Interest... Interesting

Because it's so hard to track down reviews of new shows... :)

We watched Person of Interest last night, with Michael Emerson, best known for his portrayal of Ben on LOST (and I have to confess, he's half the reason I decided to try it. While his characters are creepy, he does creepy so darn well, I have a hard time resisting).

Verdict? Definitely will be watching next week. Although the premise is a bit dark, the acting and storyline were good, and hello hottie Jim Caviezel. Talk about a badass character! I think I've found my replacement for Human Target (Though Caviezel isn't quite a Mark Valley for me, at least not yet).

It's premiere week--one of my favorite times of the year. I love finding new, awesome shows. (although I'll admit, sometimes I'm a slowpoke and don't really catch on to the really good ones until their 2nd season or beyond)

We watched 2 Broke Girls Monday, and the snarky bits really cracked me up. (tender moments, not so much; don't know if it was the acting or the script was just smarmy in places) I'll probably watch it again next week. 2 1/2 Men con Ashton is a big YES from me.

Last night I gave Unforgettable a shot. Briefly. And you know, I love The Mentalist, and there was another show a few years ago about a psychic who "witnessed" crimes (murders?) that I kinda got into. But this one? Meh. Maybe I was permanently turned off by the show's expert, who went through a crime scene/home and determined the woman who lived there was a "lonely woman" because all her books were romances.

!!!!

Now, I understand it was the character's opinion, and not necessarily the script writer's... except none of the other characters refuted his call. Kinda irked me. Kinda irked me enough that I picked up my phone and cruised Twitter til I was caught up, then glanced up in time to see some psychic scenes flashing by and really couldn't bring myself to care about the story anymore. Changed the channel to the news. See, for a character to be a successful, liked-by-fans jackass, he's got to have established a relationship with his audience first. Be an amazing, smart-as-hell doctor, like Greg House. But not some dude who just spouts jerky opinions. (wrong opinions, by the way. LOL)

So that's a free time slot I'll have every week. :)

Jelly plunge

Life is all about trying new things, right?

This week I'm going to attempt making jelly. We've got 5 trees sagging with awesome little purple plums, and just can't see letting them go to waste (we can only eat so many, LOL). So, jelly it is. Seems like a relatively simple venture into the World of Canning.

Won't be today, though--I've got a truckload of editing projects to get caught up, reformatted, turned around, uploaded and/or forwarded to the correct place. And tomorrow I'm teacher stunt-doubling. So maybe Wednesday... will report back with the results.

We've got cottonwood trees around our house, and a few of them seem to be from some goliath species. The trees themselves aren't particularly large, but they grow the most awesome, gargantuan leaves.

The photo shows an average size cottonwood leaf, one from our Lou Ferrigno tree (Texas tree? Google tree?), and a block of Post-It notes, just for size reference.

Big, huh?

I'm collecting the leaves, thinking there's gotta be something craftalicious and MarthaStewarty I can do with them...

Anyway. As promised, I'm ready to review Boy Meets Girl, by Meg Cabot.

Yes. I give it a hearty 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, erm... what was the Piper Patter book review highest honors? Oh yeah. Get Your Own Copy. Yeah, that.

This book is so much fun! As mentioned Monday, it's written with zero narrative, entirely of IMs, emails, voice mails (texting wasn't huge when this book came out, 2004ish). This makes it superfast to read, and chock full of character voice, quirks, and snark. I giggled very much. (really, though, I can kind of see why it's hard to track down these types of books in ebook--with all the special formatting involved, it'd be pretty hard to put out a readable version)

The romance is fun, with endearing H and h, both of whom have many reasons to mistrust/dislike the other. And the "bad guys"? A couple who are so utterly despisable (is that a word, or is this what despicable is supposed to replace?), their emails made me wrinkle my nose and hold the book away, in an effort to ward off their stinky snottiness. In other words, they are perfect for each other. LOL

What are you waiting for? Go read it, already. :)

Fun Read

I'm reading Meg Cabot's Boy Meets Girl, and it's such a fun book to read. The entire novel is emails, voice mails, and IMs between the characters. Very funny. (Her Every Boy's Got One is also like this, and it made me laugh out loud so many times.) Rather an unusual delivery, with no narrative at all, but it's snappy and fast-paced, and makes me wonder how much of our narrative is really necessary.

Will probably be delivery review... soon.

The following post will probably be offensive to idiots, illegals, illiterates, and anyone who feels it necessary or "PC" to coddle them. So if you might belong in one of those categories (don't worry about admitting to the Idiot category--true idiots have no idea of their condition), then please click away and go somewhere else. And without further ado...

Why can't people use the friggin' correct form of "your"? This is not rocket science. "Your" is a pronoun which describes something belonging to you. Your house, your car, your big fat pimple. Your grammar, your education, your whatthehellever you have. "You're"--as indicated by that magical punctuation mark known as an apostrophe--is two words smooshed together, with some letters gone. Those words are "you" and "are". You're kidding me, you're insane, you're invited.

You're invited.

(also, let us not forget "You're in my bubble", which some brilliant mom in town has on the back of her SUV--misspelled as "Your in my bubble", big as shit, to let the whole world know she's illiterate in not just one but two languages)

Which brings me to the cause of this post. Some group calling themselves Literacy Outreach or something similar with the word LITERACY is going around handing out flyers with "YOUR INVITED" plastered in giant letters across the top. Encouraging us all to raise readers.

Uh. *insert Beavis laugh* How 'bout we raise some spellers first? I blame part of this rash of illiteracy on the mishmash of languages and nonEnglish speakers who feel English is just too darn hard to master, so they'll just take a stab at it however sounds right. (like the sign at the front of the neighborhood that read: Yar Sao. I am not making this up! Yar Sao, when said quickly, on a Saturday morning, translates to Yard Sale, in case you're*yore* wondering.) At least one of my kids has tried to tell me it doesn't matter whether you use "your" or "you're". The furious lil texters insist that nobody cares about those things anymore.

Excuse me? I damn well care! I care so much, that here's what I think:

I think if yore ass is dumb enough to go around misusing words like "there, their, they're" and "you're, your"--particularly while claiming to be affiliated with anything educational and/or literate (and yes, this includes the fools making up the flyers for school pictures who think apostrophes belong in plurals--they don't; that's why God created the letter "s"--but that's a whole other rant) then you (ewe? ha!) should be punished. If you can't use the English language properly, then yore not allowed to use it at all. Period. Yore (God, isn't that annoying how I keep f***ing that up?) grounded from English. So go learn (or relearn) another language, or go take a refresher course at yore local college. In the meantime, don't write it or speak it. (Here's where Big Brother would come in handy) Once ewe feel ewe can behave and use it correctly, yore welcome to take a re-English test. Administered at the DMV. Enjoy the hell out of that. Oh, and if you have misworded crap on your car, you'll have to also get a new driver's license. And take that test in English, too.

If you've moved here from another country, and really don't intend to learn English (as only the very most recent rush of immigrants have decided, the last 20 years or so), go the hell back to where it's easy to talk. No, really. I'm not being bitchy. I'm being serious. All the immigrants who came here from Russia and Poland and Nigeria and all over the damn world managed to master English. It's spoken the world over. If you can't get it right, then there might be something wrong with you, not with the rest of the world.

Ahh. I love whipping out a squeaky-clean, fresh-off-the-assembly-line-smelling new feature. And my newest, as indicated by the post title, is all about naming those humans for whom there'll be a special place in hell.

Today I'm spotlighting dumpers. I live in a somewhat rural area, and it seems everywhere there's a natural wash type area (aka gulch)--or even just a long, quiet stretch of county road--some asshat decides to dump used tires, appliances, rotten sofas, bags of trash, etc. What gives? Do these losers suddenly get a bug up their butt one day and decide to clean up the yard, load the junk up in the back of their pickup, and cruise around looking for a place to chuck it all? (We do have areas set up just for this type of thing. We nosebreathers call them "landfills".)

Enter the ever-informative sign. Which always makes me shake my head. First of all, it's a crying shame we actually need a sign to tell people they can't just throw their garbage on the side of the road. But also... what is the likelihood a potential dumper read that sign and say, "Oh. I'm not supposed to dump here. Better find another spot. Maybe I'll go to the dump." Pretty slim.

We can only hope they get something special later on, right?

Of movies and superheroes, hotels and hardbacks.

The "old folks" used to say you learn something every day, but I like to think with all the information coming at us from so many different types of media, we learn quite a few things every day.

We spent last weekend in Denver, in part to get away and lounge by a pool at a nice hotel, and in part to celebrate the Big Mister's birthday. And like every day, I did learn some things:

It's really not that hot poolside, when the outside temp is 70 degrees. To that end, goosebumps go a long way to preventing sunburn. (incidentally, we were not the only family who figured out the posh Denver Tech Center hotels/suites are dirt cheap on weekends, thus making it a very affordable destination for chillin' and shopping at the nearby AWESOME Park Meadows Mall.)
Teenagers can maintain "pissy", regardless what fun thing you take them to do.
$90 jeans for girls size 4-16 (daughterhead is out of that size, BTW, but we noticed the designer name when walking by). $90?? Oh, my smoking head! 90 bucks for jeans that'll fit a little girl for about 15 minutes--unless she's in size 16 and has missed her appointment with the Pituitary Gland OR is of certain Asian descent and will never be taller than Danny DeVito. Crazyshit, dat.
Reading a hardcover book makes me really appreciate my Reader. I'm all ebooks, all the time, from here on out, library be damned.
Except... I did get hold of a Lori Foster for nice-n-cheap at the Borders final 10 day sale. It's paperback, though, which is infinitely easier to lug around and hold open than a hardback. (I also bought a stack of my own books for just $4 each, which might sound weird, but hey, that's much cheaper than I can replenish inventory, and I sure didn't want them coming back to haunt me on a Returns statement.)

We also went to the movies to see Cowboys and Aliens (which I totally enjoyed--the "good" cowboy isn't all that good, and the "bad" cowboy isn't nearly as bad as everyone thinks, plus I like the actress who played "13" on House, and she's in this movie). I also learned some things from the movie previews:

There'll never be too many inspirational movies about horses, and the humans' whose lives they touch. (as evidenced by Disney's War Horse)
Medical marijuana is an endless source of comedy (preview for 50/50)
We can definitely have more movies with Bradley Cooper as the male lead.
The cast of The Big Bang Theory is everywhere. Which is fine--I love all those actors; I'll just be sad when they move on to bigger and better, which'll be the end of a really funny series.
I'd have been just fine if they'd have stopped making Batman, Dark Knight movies after, say, the first one. I've got zero interest in seeing this next, "final" one. The preview doesn't thrill me at all. Besides, I'm fundamentally against actors portraying more than one superhero. I applaud Robert Downey, Jr. and think it's awesome he's turned is life--and career-around, but he's Iron Man. Not Batman. And what the heck is the deal with Batman anyhow? Nobody sticks around for more than one movie in that role. Batman is not friggin' James Bond, for God's sake. It's bad enough running all these different actors through the role, but one who's known as another Superhero? No way. I can't imagine Toby Maguire stepping in to play Superman, or Christopher Reeves playing Spidey. One superhero per actor. Should be a law. And hey, maybe the next Bond Boy should be Bradley Cooper...
And, most importantly of all: JON BON JOVI is in the sequel to Valentine's Day--New Year's Eve. Jon Bon Jovi, people!!! I almost had to whip out the iPhone and text my pal about it.

I'm off now to ponder future roles for Sir Bradley. And sir JonBon.

What will be the "next hot thing" in publishing?

People are talking about knit lit. People are grumbling about vampires, wondering when their popularity will die. (as my friend Sutton pointed out to me, vampires probably won't die--they are undead. LOL) Readers still argue about chick lit: is it over, or is it alive and kicking, or perhaps living under an alias? One thing is for certain: Genres with a bit of alliteration or rhyme in their name tend to flare in popularity.

So here are some Next Hot Thing possibilities--I'll be watching the submissions@lyricalpress.com inbox for these:

Fit Lit: All about people into fitness. Perhaps they work in health clubs, teach workout classes, or are just really into being in shape. (I'm guessing the H and h will often be wearing Spandex on these covers) Think Love at Bally's, 24-Hour Romance, Bench Press My Heart
Twit Lit: Stories about men and women who aren't the brightest bulbs on the block(aka dumbasses), but find true love with similar souls. Think I Forgot my PIN, But I Can't Forget You;
Sit Lit: Stories about coach potatoes who find love online. She's watching child birth stories on Discovery Health while surfing Match.com; he's on a break from Age of Empires while the kid in Singapore he's playing with eats his dinner, and his basement-dwelling friend in Canada has to run an errand for his mother. He logs on to all 3 dating sites he's registered with, sees her profile, and Bam! something clicks (well, something besides her peripheral mouse and his Playstation controller)
Sick Lit: About those who are perpetually ill, and hypochondriacs. Think Who Needs Sucrets When We Can Make Out?, Heart Aches and Pains, Love Me Like Tiger Balm
Wit Lit: Romances involving comedians (sexier ones than on Seinfeld, I hope). Think Tough Crowd, Hot Sex and My Love is No Joke. Expect some wonderful one-liners in the proposals from these heroes.
Pit Lit: Tales of those who work in the pit at car races. These people deal with speed, power, risk... and a nice bonus for a win. Besides, what could be sexier than coveralls and strategic oil smudges? Strip My Tires, Check My Oil and Heart Torque
Mitt Lit: Even though pretty much any player with an ounce of cool says "glove" and not "mitt" (and this is one genre I could totally get into--I'd love to read these)... Stories about baseball players, their managers, coaches, etc. Yum. I probably shouldn't even get started on mock-up titles--way too much fodder for bad puns. This one might really have a market--look how many baseball movies are out there!
Kick Lit: How about a series based in a country bar? Cowboys, beer, shots of whiskey, line dancin', cowboys... it's a recipe for short-term love, at the very least. Did I mention cowboys?

Okay, that should be enough suggestions to get some wheels turning in the industry. Thank me later, when bookshelves are chock full of books with covers featuring a honky-tonk, a baseball diamond, or a weight machine.

People who write letters to the editor should know what they're talking about. They should have their facts right, or face... I don't know... flogging? No, I'm kidding--but it would be awesome if they lost the privilege of using that venue to get their "opinions" out there.

Around here, if you see a letter to the editor trashtalking our school system/school board/school administrators/teachers, etc, you can pretty much count on the signature at the bottom being from one particular lady--and hopefully most people simply roll their eyes and skip over her drivel. She seldom knows what she's talking about. In fact, I've never seen her inside a school volunteering--just appearing to complain about something and then going on her seldom-merry way. This time she's published false facts about the end-of-year district employee party, which she claims to have "witnessed" and says is at the taxpayers' expense. It's not--the funds for that party come from a contractor the school has used for several buildings, and the money is earmarked for that party only. She also said in her letter that the employees' lodging is included. It's not--employees have always paid for their own rooms, and in fact this year, were asked to pay a small fee at the door to help cover the cost of their dinner, too.

I just have to wonder how one person can be so petty. Every time the district tries to get a mill levy override, she's out there campaigning hard against it, slandering their efforts. Kinda makes me wonder if she once tried for a job there and was turned down, or what? If she was someone who knew what she was talking about, it'd all be different. But man. It's really hard for me to hold my tongue (fingers) and keep from replying to her, correcting all her misinformation. I could so flame this nasty old lady...

Maybe I'll just sit on my fingers and hope a miracle happens and she gets a clue. Stranger things have happened, right?

Seems women are leaning toward dedicated book-reading devices, whereas men go for all the bells and whistles. Hm. Gadget envy? Function envy? I-can't-afford-the-fuel-for-a-Vette-so-I-got-this-tablet, ain't-I-a-stud envy?

I'm pretty excited about the older crowd getting ereaders--so nice for those who need larger fonts to read comfortably!

When I was twenty-two my best friend took me shopping and very gently told me to quit dressing like a twelve year old boy. Looking back, I’m grateful for her intervention. T-shirts and jeans are fantastic and I still wear them all the time, but let’s just say...yeah things are better now.

Dressing characters is something I really have to think about because fashion to me isn’t that important. I know to some people, clothes really say a lot about a personality and I want the details to line up. A woman who wears long skirts and flowy blouses provides a softer feel. Piercings and tattoos give a completely different impression. That goes for men as well. The button up shirt, slacks vs. jeans, how they cut their hair—each detail adds another dimension.

Sometimes the clothes really mean something. If there’s been trauma a certain outfit or piece of clothing might be a comfort. It could add to a mask the character wears around others. Not wearing a certain item might signify freedom.

What a character wears or doesn’t wear can set a mood and tone of a story. Starting out by leaving the panties at home sets an immediate sexy scene where layering on long underwear, jeans, snow pants and parka...not so much.

Has a character ever had a style you wanted to emulate? A pair of shoes you really wanted?

I tried this book because, well... it's by an author on my roster and I love her stuff. Plus, it was a good deal, and I'll admit to a smidgen of curiosity because she'd self-pubbed it. (We've all heard the really bad reports about self-pubbed books that are a total trainwreck, but I had faith in her.) So here's my review:

Good outlook, and... cowardly authors?

Yet another news article detailing the explosion in ereading since 2008--this one brought on by info from the techno-makers behind eInk displays. Good news.

Which goes on to discuss ebooks, ebooks conquering paperbacks on Amazon, another self-pubbed author hitting it big (1 million Kindle copies) on Amazon, and the inevitable... ebook pricing.

Oh, and let us not forget, we've got yet another best-selling author who has apparently relied upon a somewhat gutless agent for eons and believes authors' hands are tied by this newfangled ebook business because publishers just don't want to pay authors properly for their hard work. Pardon me, but there's this document called a contract... unless somebody's holding la pistola to your head or has tied a fair maiden to parallel iron tracks with an attached locomotive barreling straight for her, you don't have to sign it (even if the handle-bar mustached agent tells you to). You're legally free to find one someplace else, where they will pay you properly. Heck, here's an idea. Why not search out some small press whose entire year(existence?) you'd like to make, sign with them (for a whopping huge percentage compared to what you're used to), and use your significant fan base to sell your next book? You don't need no stinking big publisher. People buy your books because your name is on them--not because of that publisher logo on the cover. Grow some business cajones and go for it. You'll be able to stand much taller in your boots, knowing you stood up for yourself and took charge of your business, rather than... whatever it is you're doing now.

I predict about the time each of our friendly large publishers lose a couple of their "star" authors who've set out on their own, said large publishers will begin offering much better terms on electronic royalties. Or is that just wild thinking?

Apple and 5 of the Big 6 publishers are being sued for illegal price fixing via the agency model.

Or, at the other end of the spectrum and laid out in more crisp black and white, a Windows IT article. I rather enjoyed this article more--especially the quote from Steve Jobs "Apple CEO Steve Jobs infamously dissed ebooks two years before releasing iBooks, claiming, "The fact is that people don't read anymore. The whole conception is flawed at the top."

Heh. Although I'm sure Jobs is man enough to admit he was wrong, it is funny to see how wrong so many bigwigs were about ebooks.

Meanwhile...Both articles say ebook sales have jumped 1274% since 2008, which is a much more feasible figure than that 39% in the article I cited in Wednesday's post, about ebooks saving the publishing biz. I still have no freaking idea where that number came from.

In yet another article, this one on the site belonging to the law firm representing the plaintiffs,

we discover that anyone who has purchased an ebook by one of the big 6, since the agency model was adopted (basically since iPad released). The site even has a link to register as potential plaintiff. Which makes it very easy and also makes me wonder if this isn't The Case this firm is hoping for to make their name. And yet... I really don't think it's okay for those big publishers to have told Amazon what price they could sell their books for--and if Amazon didn't comply, they pulled the books. Hello? Amazon is largely responsible for making ebooks what they are now. Go anyplace and listen to somebody mention ebook readers--somebody will invariably say, "You mean a Kindle?" On our flights last month, when the attendants asked everyone to power off electronic devices, they'd say, "This includes Kindle book readers." Kindle is the Kleenex (Band-Aid) of ereaders. For those publishers to waltz in and take advantage of Amazon's much-earned success in ebooks by saying, "Whoa. Now this is the new craze. We're going to make more money on it, and you're going to charge that money for us"... is not okay. Do filmmakers get to tell theaters how much they'll charge per ticket for people to see their movies? Digitally downloaded songs and CDs are usually cheaper than buying the actual CD, and we don't see music artists bitching that they are losing money. Contrary to a snarky comment from a best-selling author to me last summer, something along the lines of, "Sure, I'll sign your Sony Reader, even though I hate what ebooks are doing to the publishing industry" it seems the sale of ebooks has driven overall growth in that industry. (and is me, or does that guy reading in the photo look like the head Nazi in Raiders of the Lost Ark? You know, the one whose face melted off when they opened the Ark?)

I'm a bit confused about some of their numbers--for instance, I'm pretty sure ebook sales overall have gone up more than 39% in the past three years (more like 300% if I was to guess). But still.

People obviously think there are jobs to be had in the publishing business too, judging by the number of people who query me every day asking about editing jobs.

Recession much? Seems like everybody is after a 2nd job, which unfortunately many people believe will pay millions because "SusieLou in your hometown is earning $8000 a week working at home!" People just don't want to hear that those jobs don't really exist. (live webcams not withstanding)

This is probably my favorite bra of all time. Not only can you change the straps out and attach them halter-style, racerback, or normal, but you can also change where they attach along the back strap. (very nice for women like me with somewhat narrow slip-off shouders--you can adjust the straps to hook toward the middle, without being crisscrossed, and still hide them under any type of tank top) It comes with a set of clear straps also, though I'll admit those drive me nuts. The last option would be strapless... which makes this the ultimate bra to wear shopping, because no matter what you're trying on, this bra will work with it.

At $50, it's not cheap, but not more than most of Victoria's Secret bras.

Definitely gets the Piper Patter Seal of Affection.

This is me on the first evening, in all my just-showered-and-didn't-bother-with-much-makeup-or-hairstyling glory:

One of many floaties we spent hours on. Kinda cute how somebody pushed it out there with 2 straws in 1 cup. Every beach chair at the resort comes with one of these--makes it nice and cushy for laying on the chair, and divine for floating in the water.

Ugh. Only problem with skimming emails for pressing matters for 2 weeks is, all those not-so-pressing items become a bit more important with the time lapse.

I spent yesterday planning a strategy (aka composing Mongo To Do List) for conquering it. So away I go. If I don't surface by Wednesday, send in reinforcements, will ya?

I use this Nifty Grabber for all sorts of things, from reaching the pull-string on ceiling fans to grabbing down the mongo-packs of paper towels and toilet paper I keep on the ledge above the over-the-laundry cabinets, to grabbing hubby's rear end. Oh, and also to occasionally retrieve a lost sock or pair of undies when they slip behind the washer.

We found ours at Home Depot, for around $15-$20. And it's been soooo worth it.

I really, really love this product. Bed, Bath & Beyond sells 2 different models--the other is stainless steel and costs about double, but I can tell you the plastic one works just fine.

I love pineapple, but it's such a sticky mess to process, and dang near impossible to get rid of all that rough husk and chewy core. Not anymore! I'm telling you, this tool makes it so fast and easy, I want to have a pineapple party. I could buy a whole stack and just keep coring and wedging them all day long.

For 10 bucks, how can you go wrong?

There's definitely a threshold

My friend and I had a lengthy text-versation yesterday about ebook prices. She wants to buy the new Jennifer Weiner ebook, but doesn't want to pay the going price. And I don't blame her. The going price is $12.99. We both agreed that for a new book by a bestselling author, $9.99 feels like the most we're willing to pay.

And ya know, I realize I've made comparisons between the music industry and the publishing industry before, but I'm going to do it again. I pay between $0.89 and $1.29 per song for music--whether it's old or new, whether it's by Bon Jovi, or Lady Gaga, or David Archuletta or Weird Al. It's a song. (and the $0.89 only come from Amazon, btw). A digital audio file. Well, guess what? I don't care if it's a book by a new author and it's her first release, or it's by Stephen King or Jenn Weiner or who. It's a book. A digital text file.

My person opinion is, if the authors and their agents aren't earning enough from ebooks that they have to be priced as high as trade paperbacks, well... their publishers are obviously taking too high a cut. (and we know they are--we're bombarded with articles on the web about the small royalty percentage the big pubs pay on ebooks, compared to what smaller pubs pay. But who's letting them get by with this, signing those contracts?) Bestselling authors can certainly choose whatever publisher they damn well please, and get their books contracted/marketed/sold. Hell. Once they have a following, they can self-pub if they want, and hire their own editors/marketers. They're the ones in this equation with the power to change the pricing. (and they just might be the first ones to feel the squeeze, if other readers feel as squeamish about paying so much for a book)

Just sayin'.

So, what's your threshold? Is there a price you feel is too high?

Is a quiet library a relic?

I spent some time working in our local library today (gassed the house for summer insects and had to vacate for a couple hours). Here I thought it'd be a nice, quiet place to concentrate.

Wrong.

Now, I understand kids are a huge portion of the patrons, and I'm all for that. But what I don't get is, don't moms teach their kids to be quiet in the library anymore? It's not a playland. I know the children's section has some neat things for toddlers to get their hands on, but that isn't an open license to run screaming throughout the building, or throw things, or tumble, or... Hey. I remember what it's like to have energetic little ones, and there's no way you can predict what they're going to do next. But when they do something entirely too loud or out of appropriate norms in a given setting (church, library, etc), the mom should it at least give them a "Shhh!" How else are they going to learn?

And I'm used to working around activity--old episodes of Seinfeld, teen kids fighting, cats begging to go in or out, incoming texts and calls... I don't need total peace. But sheesh.

Heading home to work on the back porch outside. Where it's semi-quiet.

Ten things I bet you didn’t know about body paint:

1) Mehndi or “henna tattoos” are a form of body paint. Through the application of the design on a body, they look almost like ink tattoos but slowly wear off after a week or two.

2) Some young Nuba (African) men celebrate their youth and vigor by painting their bodies.

3) Recent archeological research indicates that body paint may have been used as far back in the past as by Neanderthals.

4) In 1933 at the World Fair in Chicago, Max Factor (founder of Max Factor & Company cosmetics) was arrested for bringing a model dressed only in the specialized body paint he was developing for Hollywood.

5) In the 1950s and 1960s, there was an alternative art movement which involved painting a nude model and having that model then roll on a canvas to distribute it.

6) The World Body Painting Festival in Seeboden in Austria is the largest in the world, boasting thousands of visitors.

7) There are art galleries to display such body art. Craig Tracy is a famous artist who has opened one such gallery in New Orleans, called Painted Alive.

8) In 2009, Air New Zealand, a national airline, recorded a television commercial and safety video wearing painted-on uniforms as a part of their “Nothing to Hide” campaign. CEO Rob Fyde also took part in this activity.

9) Perhaps the most famous instance of the use of body paint is worn by model Rebecca Romijn as Mystique in the X-Men movies.

Are you a checker?

I love things that are concrete. (not sidewalk kind of concrete, but real kind of concrete, so don't start thinking you need to put me on an episode of Taboo or anything) One of the job-skills/personality strengths assessments I took long, long ago pegged me as someone who likes to know exactly what is expected of me, what is coming up. Totally true. Which makes me... listmaker. A checker-off-er. I love to create lists of what I know I have to get done (and I always leave room to write in things I end up doing that I didn't foresee), so I can look back and see how much I've finished in relation to how much is left. And lists on the computer are... just okay for me. I do like to generate the lists there, but then I always print them. For me, there's whole other level of accompishment-satisfaction in physically checking something off.

How the heck this relates to someone who writes mainly by the seat of her pants, I cannot say. LOL

But the fact is, I've got the Megalodon of all To-Do lists running right now, to keep myself on track for finishing everything before my upcoming vacation... and I'm pretty stoked looking at it. Looks like I'm going to have all those boxes checked.

Cookbooks... victims of the internet?

My cookbooks are gathering dust, and not because I've stopped using recipes (or cooking, though my family might argue). I still use them for my tried-and-true favorite recipes--got an index box with the best of those, mostly magazine tearouts, and some of them are internet printouts. But, when I'm going for something new, I turn to the net. Because, let's face it... my sweet collection of cookbooks can't come close to the vast number of recipes online.

This morning it was a recipe for croutons. I know I made them a couple years ago, but can't remember if it was from a book or the net. So I blew 10 minutes looking through all my books... and here I am now, going online to read some better ones. (note I said "read". LOL. This is one where I'll look at how somebody else does it, take away what I want, and wing it."
